Why are our lasers very different from consumer diode lasers?

Consumer diode lasers (450 nm): numerous limitations

Laser engravers sold to the general public (2W, 5W, 20W, sometimes advertised as 40W but optically much weaker) are almost always 450 nm diode lasers , recognizable by their blue color.

These devices have major limitations:

•❌ Very low absorption in metals → impossible to actually engrave steel, stainless steel, titanium, etc.

•❌ Inaccurate thermal engraving → burns the wood, blackens it, but there is no clean marking

• ❌ No engraving on glass (except approximate marking)

• ❌ Actual power much lower than advertised (often 5W – 10W actual optical power)

• ❌ Absence of galvanic head → slow engraving, lack of precision

• ❌ Limited durability and contrast

These machines are suitable for simple hobbies (wood, cardboard, imitation leather) but do not allow for professional engraving or clean results on technical materials .
